Dr Yunus Omar is Co-Investigator of the Africa Hub of the PEER Network. He is based at the University of Cape Town, where he convenes the Education Policy stream of the School of Education and teaches in the areas of the sociology of education and education policy. Yunus has collaborated on projects related to violence and education in post-conflict contexts in South Africa and Rwanda, with his main research focus on the roles of teachers in impoverished rural communities in South Africa. His research interests include the political economy of education and decolonisation, the politics of exile and education, violence and education, teacher-resistance under conditions of social oppression, teacher life-narratives, teachers and their complex contributions to radical social change, and the constitutive and enduring role of colonialism in shaping and underpinning research in the present that seeks to align with social justice principles.
