Rahimjon Abdugafurov

Dr. Rahimjon Abdugafurov received his PhD from the Islamic Civilizations Studies Program at Emory University. His research interests include Women in Islam, Sufism, and Muslim relations with non-Muslims. Dr. Abdugafurov is a Senior Fellow at the Center for the Study of Law and Religion at Emory Law School. As a research associate of the University of Sussex in the PEER-Network, he studies the impact of Islamic discourses in women’s participation in higher education in Ferghana Valley. Dr. Abdugafurov holds a master’s degree in higher education administration from Vanderbilt University, and has published on topics ranging from education to social issues in relation to Central Asia.

Religious Discourses and Women’s Participation in Higher Education in Uzbekistan

Do private and public religious discourses influence women’s participation in higher education? The current research project, conducted in Uzbekistan, will answer this question by reviewing books and social media sources produced by four religious public figures from two different political periods. Additionally, the project will analyse school textbooks on ethics.
