The Political Economy of Education Research Network (PEER Network) recently held an end-of-project meeting at Ulster University to reflect on the achievements of the three-year project and to discuss research outputs delivered by a network of early career researchers, who were supported by the project to conduct their research.

Introductory Workshop for Nazarbayev University GSE PhD students on “Researching the Political Economy of Education and Conflict in Times of Conflict & Crises”

On 29 September 2022, the Central Asia hub conducted an introductory workshop for PhD students of Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education. The workshop was facilitated by Professor Mario Novelli (University of Sussex), Professor Naureen Durrani and Associate Professor Hélène Thibault (Nazarbayev University). During the introductory one-day workshop, participants explored a number of questions relating to what political economy analysis of education is, why it might be useful and how it relates to research on education in Kazakhstan and the broader Central Asia region.

On the 28th of September, Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Education hosted a public lecture, “The Imperial Entanglements of ‘Education in Emergencies’: From Saving Souls to Saving Schools?” by Professor Mario Novelli. Professor Novelli spoke of the relationship between ‘International Education and Development’ actors and foreign intervention in our colonial past and present, focusing on Education in Emergencies.
